Central Edinburgh Quakers open letter to MSPs on Climate change
Central Edinburgh Quakers are asking MSPs to take urgent action on climate change. In their open letter, they suggest specific actions within the remit of the Scottish Parliament:
woodland expansion and other nature-based programmes
stepping up the decarbonisation of transport
reducing food-miles when setting up catering contracts
improved energy efficiency in our existing building stock and infrastructure
Quakers have long been aware of our role in stewardship of our planet, our only home. InĀ 1772 John Woolman wrote:
The produce of the earth is a gift from our gracious creator to the inhabitants, and to impoverish the earth now to support outward greatness appears to be an injury to the succeeding age.
The overwhelming evidence of global warming makes us more aware than ever of the fragility of our planet and ecosystems. The letter ends: "Humankind is author of this dire situation and, as an MSP, you can help to take immediate, direct action to safeguard the future of our planet and avert mass extinctions."
